Vince Gill Shares His Thoughts on Today’s Country Music..and He’s Right On!

Posted 15 May 2012 in Music + TV News, Uncategorized

For quite some time now I’ve been harsh on today’s country music, or more specifically, the state of today’s country radio. Now I’ve been joined by Vince Gill in its critique. It’s sad when Taylor Swift can dominate country radio and Merle Haggard can’t get a sniff. And I’m not talking about Merle’s old great albums I’m referring to his last couple of albums. They’ve been great yet completely ignored. Justin Townes Earle’s “Harlem River Blues” also did not receive any country airplay. — Larry Carta Vince’s career began with country-rockers Pure Praire League. He recently spoke with Great American Country’s Sarah Wyland. This appeared on their website. ———— Vince Gill released his latest album, Guitar Slinger, in...

Billie Holiday ‘Body and Soul’

Posted 18 Mar 2012 in Uncategorized

Song Of The Day by Eric Berman – “They Can’t Take That Away From Me” by Billie Holiday You can tell a lot about people by the records they own. A relative of a friend dropped some records off at my house this weekend for me to look at. While most had condition issues and were hardly worth selling on eBay, the guy did have some interesting and really good records which he graciously told me to keep anyway. There were jazz records from the 1950s, at least a dozen Sinatra albums, a fair share of classical recordings including several by Russian composer Shostakovich, some requisite Broadway cast albums, and, of course, a copy of Herb Alpert’s Whipped...

You can hear the song and the video...

Austin City Limits to Replay Classic 1978 Tom Waits Episode This Weekend

Posted 19 Dec 2011 in Uncategorized

Back in 1978 I had a chance to see Tom Waits in a small venue near the lovely town of Valparaiso, Indiana.  I didn’t really know much about him at the time. I went with a friend from work. The reason we went was actually to see the opening act, Leon Redbone. Leon had laryngitis that evening.  He never spoke a word. His still did his full show, just everything was instrumental. He would then hold up a little sign that read “Thank You” after each song.  He was still enjoyable, but I wish I could have heard the “real” version of  Champagne Charlie! After a short delay to change the stage set up, Tom Waits made an appearance.  I’ve seen...
