David Bromberg “How Late’ll Ya Play ‘Til?”

Today’s Cool Album of the Day (#255 in the Series, and #15 in the Live, Saturday Night Series) is David Bromberg, How Late’ll Ya Play ‘Til? It’s about time we got some good ol’ blues on here!  There is a few different versions of this album. This is, of course, the ‘live’ version. David Bromberg is a multi-instrumentalist.  Not just playing, but creating instruments as well.  He’s proficient as a fiddler, acoustic, steel, electric guitar and also dobro. He’s only released a handful of albums since 1980 as he’s concentrated more on his violin workshops. His first was in the Chicago area and has since moved it to Wilmington, Delaware. David has completed tracks with the following guest artists...

The Steepwater Band ‘Live at the Double Door”

Today’s Cool Album of the Day (#248 in the Series, and #14, in the Live, Saturday Night Series) is The Steepwater Band, Live at the Double Door. I used to have a gig trying to book gigs for bands years ago. You’d assemble a promo kit and try to get your name in front of agents and club owners etc.  One of the questions they’d always ask, and quickly too, was ‘How many members in band, son? Not, ‘Are they any good?  Or ‘Where else have you played?’ No it was ‘How many members?!’ If you answered by describing you were representing a three piece…we’ll, you were not very welcomed in the south, southwest suburbs of Chicago and even...

Savoy Brown “Raw Sienna”

Today’s Cool Album of the Day (#237 in the Series) is Savoy Brown, Raw Sienna. I’m sure the old timers in our group know the story of Savoy Brown.  But for those who don’t, quickly… Savoy Brown was the fantastic blues-rock band that produced some great music starting in the later 60s. It was mostly Kim Simmonds band.  Three early mainstays of the band, Tony (aka Tone) Stevens, Roger Earl and “Lonesome” Dave Peverett would later leave to form another successful band, Foghat. Savoy Brown would continue and continue to make some great music for years to come. However, you never had a clue who Kim would have in his band from day to day. I guess that did...

Pat Travers Band “Live! Go For What You Know”

Today’s Cool Album of the Day (#220 in the Series) is Pat Travers Band,  Live! Go For What You Know. Bring up Pat’s name in any conversation involving music and you’ll almost always get one of three responses: 1.)Who? (A response by a music fan that generally doesn’t care for guitar slingers.) 2.) Oh yeah, the “Boom Boom” guy. (A response by the general mainstream music buying public.) 3.) He’s the best F’n guitarist around! (If you get this response, you’ve just met a die-hard Travers fan, affectionately referred to as a Hammerhead.) Pat was one of the solo act, high energy blues rock guitar heroes popular during the mid to late 70’s residing alongside the likes of...

Jeff Beck “Blow By Blow”

Today’s Cool Album of the Day (#189 in the Series) is Jeff Beck, Blow By Blow. I once heard a great quote. It’s from a TV personality I can’t stand so I’m not going to give him credit. Sorry. Email me if it’s that important for you to know who it is. He said, “You’re not a house-hold name until my Mother knows who you are.” I love that quote!  It’s pretty true. Jeff Beck really was a ‘known’ guitarist after playing in the Yardbirds.  He also had released a few nice solo albums under the Jeff Beck Group banner.  His work with ‘Beck, Bogert and Appice’ was also received very well. Next up was his great album, Blow...
