Spirit’s Ed Cassidy Dead at 89 From Prostate Cancer

  We now have confirmed from two sources that drummer Ed Cassidy of Spirit has passed away this morning, December 6th from prostate cancer in Los Angeles. Mr. Cassidy formed the band Spirit in the late 60s with his stepson Randy California and others.  Mr. California preceded him in death in 1997.     The Rolling Stones have finished the second show of the 50 and Counting tour. Bill Wyman and Mick Taylor returned once again. They played on the same songs that they did the first night. Wyman on  “It’s Only Rock and Roll” and “Honky Tonk Woman” and Taylor “Midnight Rambler.” This time the two surprise guests were Florence (of ‘and the Machine’) Welch on “Gimme Shelter” and Eric Clapton on the bluesy “Champagne and Reefer.” The biggest surprise of the night was “Lady Jane.” It was the first time the band had played that live since 1967.
