Posted 12 Dec 2011 in 10s, Music + TV News

Ringo Starr has announced that January 31st 2012 (Jan 30th Worldwide) will be the date of release for his latest solo album titled, quite appropriately, Ringo 2012. It will be his 17th solo album, the Ringo 2012 title is a direct reference to his most succesfull solo album Ringo, released in 1973. That album featured a large number of giant guest stars including John Lennon, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Harry Nilsson,T-Rex’ Marc Bolan and all five members of The Band. On 2012, the guests will include Joe Walsh, Edgar Winter, Don Was, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Van Dyke Parks, Benmont Tench and more. One of the songs from Ringo, “Step Lightly” will reappear, redone on Ringo 2012.  “Wings” from Ringo...

Iron and Wine “Kiss Each Other Clean”

Today’s Cool Album of the Day (#571 in the Series) is Iron and Wine, Kiss Each Other Clean (Warner Brothers US, 4AD Worldwide) Sam Beam is a chap who may have sneaked under your radar (he did mine for a while), mainly because Iron & Wine is not the type of band to receive mass airplay on radio or T.V.  What they are about, fortunately for us, is crafting superb albums full of beautiful, heartfelt songs. First some details. Iron & Wine is one of those bands that isn’t really a band at all. It’s basically one man, Sam Beam, who writes and sings and plays on everything. It’s pretty much Sam and whoever he chooses to work with...

Lydia Loveless, “Indestructible Machine”

Today’s Cool Album of the Day (#567 in the Series) is Lydia Loveless, Indestructible Machine – NEW MUSIC REVIEW (Bloodshot Records) The first thing that hits you between the eyes when you look at the CD cover from the new release by Lydia Loveless, Indestructible Machine, is a mostly black and white female Huck Finn anti Norman Rockwell looking drawing of Lydia swigging from a gas can.   The second thing you see when you turn the cover over is a picture of the diminutive songstress smoking a cigarette next to two empty bottles and a well-played guitar. If by taking these two images into your own internal data base your resulting output delivers an alt-country version of country...

JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound “Want More”

Today’s Cool Album of the Day (#560 in the Series) is  JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound, Want More (Bloodshot Records)– NEW MUSIC REVIEW Not since The White Album has an album been more appropriately named than Want More, the groups second album, and first since signing with the eclectically cool record label Bloodshot Records, from the Chicago based neo-soul band JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound. Consider yourself warned, with the look of a slightly aged Sam Cooke along with his Otis Redding with an edge vocal style, JC Brooks and his band are poised to kidnap your ears, grab your feet, borrow your soul, and take you down a retro rabbit hole you haven’t travelled since James Brown,...

Robert Ellis “Photographs”

Today’s Cool Album of the Day (#547 in the Series) is Robert Ellis, Photographs. (New West Records) The name Robert Ellis is new to me and all I know about him is that he’s 22 years old, hails from Houston Texas and made quite a reputation for himself at “Whiskey Wednesdays” in a place called Fitzgerald’s. Oh, and he’s just made a totally brilliant album! Now some albums have you hooked from the first few listens whereas others take time to grow on you, working their charms at a nice sedate pace. This one manages to pull off the unique trick of doing both. He’s done that by making a record that has the feel of a defiantly...

Poco “Live at Columbia Studios, Hollywood 9/30/71”

Today’s Cool Album of the Day (#523 in the Series) is Poco, Live at Columbia Studios Hollywood 9/30/71 Poco, Live at Columbia Studios, Hollywood 9/30/71 while recorded over 40 years ago, did not surface until early in 2011.  We’re glad it did. I say that because the first obvious reason, that I wanted to hear this, but also for a second, even more important reason.  That being that this was a very important day in the bands history. It was a “coming out party” if you will, for the new line-up that would become the most popular in the bands history. Yeah, I know they did have a couple big hits much later, but this period will always be...

Mimi Betinis “All That Glitters”

Today’s Cool Album of the Day (#319 in the Series) is Mimi Betinis, All That Glitters. Mimi Betinis, All That Glitters was released on Feb 11th, 2011. (If I ever use the term “dropped, “please shoot me!) I know we’re only in the 1st quarter of the year but as of today, this is my favorite album of the year. There’s a real good chance that it’s not going to be topped either. Mimi (short for Demetrios) is the former leader of the Chicago area band “Pezband.”  Pezband was called a power pop act. Here’s what you probably did not know. They were the first band to be referred to as being a power pop act.  It was a...

Garland Jeffreys “The King of In Between”

Today’s Cool Album of the Day (#520 in the Series) is Garland Jeffreys, The King of In Between Ladies and Gentleman, we have another entry in the running for “Album of the Year.” The latest being Garland Jeffreys’ The King of In Between. I didn’t even know that Garland had any projects in the works. One day, I’m putting together a list on who was going to appearing on the coming weeks late night talk shows here in the states.  One name jumped out at me, was of course Garland Jeffreys.  I’ve always been a fan, going all the way back to 1977 when he was Rolling Stone Magazine’s Best New Artist. Everyone remembers “Wild in the Streets.” After...
