Howard Jones ‘Human’s Lib’

Posted 21 Jul 2011 in 80s, Albums of 1984, Albums of the 80s, Dance, New Wave

Today’s Cool Album of the Day (#441 in The Series) is Howard Jones, Human’s Lib I actually started a write up for Howard’s second album, Dream Into Action when I started doing some research.  I wanted to know the usual, chart positions, songs I may have forgotten, how many other albums the artist had etc. So I saw it was his second and I took a peak back at the debut.  I remembered how much I liked that album and called an audible! So now we’re going to do Human’s Lib. Not as successful as Dream Into Action, chart-wise, but a very good piece of music. Two songs received most of the airplay. They were, “New Song” and “What is Love.”...

Haircut 100 “Pelican West”

Today’s Cool Album of the Day (#403 in the Series) is Haircut 100, Pelican West. I’ve long been a Nick Heyward fan.  I absolutely love his North of a Miracle album. Haircut 100 is where he started.  They also released some excellent music. Their years lasted basically from about 1980 thru 1984 that was it except a couple reunion projects around 2004 and again recently.  They only had two album, this one, Pelican West was released in 1982 and Paint and Paint in 1984. Nick left the band after Pelican West and doesn’t appear on the follow up. It showed too. Their only top 40 US hit was on Pelican West that would be of course, “Love Plus One.”...

Go West “Go West”

Posted 14 May 2011 in 80s, Albums of 1985, Albums of the 80s, New Wave

Today’s Cool Album of the Day (#374 in the Series) is the self-titled debut from Go West I really dug some of the synth-rock new wave bands of the 80s. I always thought that Go West was one of the better ones.  I must say, when I started doing some of the research for this write-up, I was a little surprised how well this stood up. Not all of them do. Have any you plopped on a Thompson Twins album lately?  You might be surprised that they don’t sound all that hot! Go West was made of two band members, drummer, vocalist and double phallic named Peter Cox, along with guitarist, vocalist Richard Drummie. This was their debut album....

The Cars hit the Road for First Time in 23 Years.

Posted 13 May 2011 in Music + TV News, New Wave

The Cars have begun their first tour since 1988. They’ve done a few shows so I’m guessing people would love to know what tunes they’re doing. I love reading set lists! I always hated, years ago, opening up a newspaper to read a review and not getting hardly any information on what they played. I’ve read some where at most, three songs were mentioned. If you’re like me, they number one question I always had was, “What did they play?” The last time they played Los Angeles was 1987 according to Greg Hawkes.   They make their return as a quartet as bassist / vocalist Benjamin Orr lost his fight against pancreatic cancer in 2000. A substantial loss indeed. Here’s what...

Big Country “The Crossing”

Today’s Cool Album of the Day (#355 in the Series) is Big Country, The Crossing One thing that I had a good knack of doing when I was young was to be able to listen to albums and predict which band would fail or do well.  In my early days I felt I could have made a decent A &R guy. I’d have no chance with today’s music, but back in the day, I had a great ear for what would sell. One that I completely missed on was Big Country!  When I first heard this album I was sure that this was going to be a gigantic act.  Big, big we’re talking!! When this was released we’d already...

Icehouse “Primitive Man”

Today’s Cool Album of the Day (#167 in the Series) is Icehouse, Primitive Man. Well this is one of my more obscure titles.  In fact, I just realized that I’ve gone back to back with Australian early 80’s albums.  Oh well, there’s always been great music coming from that part of the world. There a reason I wanted to write up this album.  I worked in music related industries for many, many years.   From writing reviews to promoting concerts to music distribution etc , etc.  The entry point into the business was a part time writer, part time ad seller etc for Night Rock News out of Merrillville, Indiana.  In fact, thank you to Van Pudlo for giving me...
