Sad news coming from the Folk Rock and Christian Music worlds, as it was announced today that Dan Peek, formerly of the band America has died.

No further details are available at this time. Dan was 60.

He formed America in the late 60s with Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell. Dan would stay with the band until 1976 when he pursued a change to Christian Music.

Dan wrote and sang lead on “Lonley People” from the bands fourth album titled, Holiday.  Other notable songs by Mr. Peek included “Don’t Cross the River” from Homecoming and “Rainy Day” and “Donkey Jaw” from the self-titled debut.

His biggest hit in the Christian scene was “All things are Possible” released in 1979.

Dewey Bunnell and Gerry Beckley released statements via the America website:

We were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dan Peek yesterday. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Peek family.

“I am so sorry to learn of Dan’s passing. Dan, along with Gerry & myself, formed the band “America” as teenagers after being great friends in high school during the late 60’s. It was a joyous time for the three of us, full of excitement and laughter. We created lasting music together and experienced a life that we could never have imagined. Dan was an equal and integral part of that early history, and I have never forgotten the good times we spent making that music and learning about life together. Although we eventually went our separate ways, his contributions to the music of “America” have always been present and will last forever. This news brings great sadness. My sincere condolences go out to his wife, Catherine, and the entire Peek family. May Dan rest in peace, and his memory be cherished forever.” -Dewey Bunnell

“I am deeply saddened to hear the news of Dans passing. He was a dear friend for many years. Dan & his music will live on in the great songs he shared with us all. My sincere condolences go out to Catherine and the entire Peek family. May he rest in peace….”
-Gerry Beckley

I did not have the chance to meet Dan but was one of his fans just like millions of others thru out the world . He was my daughters cousin and we only lived 1o miles from him , He was living in Farmington Missouri and us in Flatriver Missouri which is now called Parkhills , I was always going to take my daughter Jamie over to meet her cousin and never done it and now it’s too late . You should do things and not wait for when you wait then it never happens and you miss out on things that could be very inportant in your life ! Rest in peace Dan see you in heaven when we all gather in the Lords sight .
