Mavis Staples, Elton John, Mumfords and more to pay tribute to Levon Helm at the Grammy Awards.

The Recording Academy has announced that the show this coming Sunday will feature a special performance to honor Levon Helm. It will include a presentation of The Band’s “The Weight” by Mavis Staples, Elton John, T Bone Burnett, Zac Brown and Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes.

Ken Ehrlich, the long-time producer of the Grammy Awards explained:  “Can you think of a song that fits (more)? Philosophically it fits the moment.

Ehrlich felt that the diverse lineup represented Helm well.

“Generationally it’s very mixed, and genre-wise it’s certainly mixed, and … that’s what (Helm) was all about. He was about old and young, country and pop. He was this incredibly eclectic artist.”

Look for the Helm tribute at the conclusion of the “In Memoriam” tribute. The show will be broadcast this Sunday on CBS.
