Music gives us so much joy, and occasionally, so much sadness.

Reports today of the death of Jason Molina, one of the finest talents of recent years , have left me totally shocked and stunned.

Fans knew he was unwell, he’d been out of the picture for the last three or four years but the news of his death, on Saturday March 16 at the age of 39 was completely unexpected.

Jason first came to our attention back in the 90’s as the main man behind Songs: Ohia which was essentially just a vehicle for himself. A fine body of work was carved out, culminating in the superb album Magnolia Electric Co in 2003. Jason loved the sound of that record so much that he named his next band after it and went on to record some excellent albums under that moniker, chief among them and 2009’s Josephine a classic which turned out to be his final album with the band.

He leaves behind a magnificent body of work, full of heartfelt emotion and beauty, and he will sadly missed. A wonderful talent, too soon gone.
