Ivan Neville ‘If My Ancestors Could See Me Now’

Posted 21 Aug 2019 in Albums of 1988, Albums of the 80s, Dance, Funk Rock

Today’s Cool Album Of the Day (#1016 in the Series) is Ivan Neville, If My Ancestors Could See Me Now. If My Ancestors Could See Me Now is a fantastic album by a fantastic musician, Ivan Neville. Ivan is a multi-instrumentalist and the son of the great singer, Aaron Neville.  It was released in 1988. I guess you could describe it as two parts funk, one part new wave and one part rock and roll. Toss in a little blues as well. It did well but nothing special, sales wise. It did much better with the critics. Unfortunately something went bad shortly thereafter.  There was a fall out between Ivan and his then label Polydor.  Due to that...

Keith Richards “Talk is Cheap”

Today’s Cool Album of the Day (#1013 in the Series) is Keith Richards, Talk is Cheap. I think I listen to this album more than any Stones album. Great songs, great arrangements, great musicians, great performances. But talk is indeed cheap. So give a listen to “Struggle,” ” Take It So Hard,” “You Don’t Move Me” and “I Could Have Stood You Up.”  The latter definitely channels one of Keith’s favorites, Chuck Berry. One of the more interesting cuts on the album is “Make No Mistake.” Here Keith has written a song that Al Green would be proud of.  It’s a nice departure with some great duet vocals by Sarah Dash. Word has it that this 1988 recording was during a period...

Keith Richards Confirms New “X-Pensive Winos” Album in the Works

Posted 14 May 2011 in Music + TV News

We’re you hoping for a new Rolling Stones album this year, or early next? Well, that’s not going to happen according to Keith Richards. However, there is some very good news as Keith confirmed on the Jimmy Fallon show that he does plan a new X-Pensive Winos album. This would be their third following 1988’s Talk is Cheap and 1992’s Main Offender. When asked about him trying to get the Stones together, he told Fallon “I’m trying to nail them down but I don’t want to crucify them, if you know what I mean.” Actually Keith, I don’t know what that means, but I get the idea. He did say that he and Winos’ drummer Steve Jordan have already been...

Robbie Robertson “Robbie Robertson”

Today’s Cool Album of the Day (#200 in the Series) self-titled solo debut from Robbie Robertson. This one is a ‘special’ album. I recently listen to this great work in its entirety for the first time in many moons. It was as moving as it was the first time I heard it. It is an absolute gem. “Fallen Angel” was Robbie (co-written by Martin Page)‘s tribute to Richard Manuel. Richard was Robbie’s longtime band-mate.  It features some great support vocals by Peter Gabriel. I’ve included the full list of participating musicians.  It’s quite lengthy. Special mentions include U2, Garth Hudson, Rick Danko, Terry Bozzio and Ivan Neville. It took Robbie 11 years to release his first solo effort. When...
