Stanley Clarke "School Days"

Today’s Cool Album of The Day (#655 of the Series) is Stanley Clarke, School Days We have a large number of musicians in our group. I KNOW they know this one!! Stanley Clarke was on a roll in 1976 when this was released. Playing bass for Chick Corea’s Return to Forever will do that for you. He had just released three albums. Children of Forever, Stanley Clarke and Journey to Love had both faired quite well. But School Days was a monster for him. The title track has been hailed as one of the most influential songs by a lead bassist in jazz fusion. “The Dancer” also got some play.  It’s really too bad that rock radio doesn’t play albums...

Roy Buchanan “You’re Not Alone”

Today’s Cool Album of the Day (#381 in the Series) is Roy Buchanan, You’re Not Alone. Many of you are aware of Roy Buchanan. In fact, we’ve featured him once before.  You probably know him as this guitar slinging blues player with the fastest licks in the business. This would be true, but this album is a little different.  Yes, he still plays those killer notes.  The music still has some blues base to it, but this was still quite different. OK, what makes it different? Firstly, Roy tackles some pretty well known cover tunes on this record. He plays Neil Young’s” Down By the River” and Joe Walsh’s “Turn to Stone.”  Another interesting aspect here was the use...

The Mumlers ‘Don’t Throw Me Away’

Today’s Cool Album of the Day (#827 in the Series) is The Mumlers, Don’t Throw Me Away Don’t Throw Me Away is release number two from The Mumlers.  What impresses me about this album is its uncanny ability to feel old and fresh often at the same time.  It is difficult to label their style as there are elements of jazz, folk, and psychedelia all mixed together.  If I had to pick something I would say folk with some creole jazz backing.  A lot of the vocals have a lo-fi sound which fits perfectly into their retro sound.  Their style isn’t to force the music onto people or to catch you with one or two catchy guitar...

Elton John “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”

Today’s Cool Album of the Day (#315 in the Series, and #3 in the Whale Wednesday Series) is Elton John, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. Today we continue our Whale Wednesday Series.  The idea being that we don’t want to neglect the big sellers that also hold onto some “cool” status. We know you know about these albums. However, as mentioned before, once a week, on Wednesdays, we’re still going to give them a feature. I think it’s fun to check back on some of them. I also love clicking on that playlist and just letting it roll. One of the reasons I like clicking on those playlists is of course to hear these albums again. Why? Mainly it’s because...
