Watch Entire Jerry Garcia Birthday Tribute “Move Me Brightly.” Four Hours of Great Music.

Posted 09 Aug 2012 in Music + TV News

Jerry Garcia would have turned 70 on Aug. 1, and to mark the occasion, two days after his birthday members of the Grateful Dead family threw an online musical party that was a live free webcast in HD from bandmate Bob Weir’s TRI Studios in San Rafael.  We present the video of that show below. Actor Luke Wilson (“The Royal Tannenbaums,” “Old School,” “Bottle Rocket”) was the emcee the show, billed as “Move Me Brightly,” after a line in the Garcia/Robert Hunter song “Terrapin Station.” Carlos Santana honored his fellow guitar great via a video interview. David Crosby’s poetic tribute, “Cause I’m Missing Him Tonight,” written specifically for his old friend, was read during the show. Garcia’s daughters,...

Posted 18 Jan 2012 in 80s, Albums of 1981, Albums of the 80s, Rock + Roll

Today’s Cool Album of the Day(#609 in the Series) is the self titled album by Bobby and The Midnites. Are you familiar with this one? You should be. Talk about a great grouping of musicians. Bobby is Bob Weir ( guitar, vocals) of the Grateful Dead. This was one of his many side projects. Released in 1981, the rest of the band features one of the greatest drummers that ever put wood to skin, Billy Cobham. Bass duties were held by another heavy weight, Alphonso Johnson. Bobby Cochran on guitar and vocals. Keyboards? Brent Mydland of the Dead. Even with the jazz influences, this was still a rock and roll record. Tons of great tracks, including ‘Too Many Losers,...

Sugar Lime Blue, “Far From The Tree”

By Larry Carta, March 13, 2011 One of the best parts about publishing this website is getting turned onto new bands, new albums, new music. Today I’m going to spotlight a new album by a band from Nashville, Tn. Let me introduce you to Ashley Beth, Dave Beth, Al Plourde, Russ Dean and Dan Leveillee. Collectively, they’re known as Sugar Lime Blue. Yes, I indeed did mention Nashville. However this is not a country act.  Sit back, close your eyes and think about artists like the Grateful Dead, Little Feat, Edie Brickell and even Renaissance’s Annie Haslam. Now mix them  in with R & B acts Al Green, Bill Withers, maybe some Otis etc. Ok, now you have the idea!...

Grateful Dead “Europe ’72″

Today’s Cool Album of the Day (#165 in the Series, and #1 in the Live, Saturday Night Series) is the Grateful Dead, Europe ’72. As you can see by the intro, we are breaking new ground this evening. Previously, we have not feature ‘live’ albums on our blog.  I’ve only written up two in all these days. They were Poco, Live at Columbia Studios, Hollywood 9/30/71 and Little Feat, Waiting For Columbus. The Poco entry was to help promote a great new release while the Feat album was to honor the drumming of Richie Hayward. Hayward had just passed away. But this evening that all changes as from today on, we start anew. Every Saturday we will be featuring...

Today’s Cool Album of the Day (#154 in the Series) is Merle Haggard, I Am What I Am. I was REAL late coming to the Merle Haggard appreciation society.  I’ve loved traditional country for many years.  But for some reason Merle slid though the cracks for me. That changed due to his classic song, “Sing Me Back Home.”  About five years ago I started noticing all these artist I really respected had covered it. The Grateful Dead, Flying Burrito Brothers, Heartfield, Gram Parsons and Keith Richards together, The Everly Brothers, etc etc. I had to look in on it.  Then I started checking out all these old albums and wow.  I sure missed quite a bit. Instead of featuring...

Grateful Dead “Terrapin Station”

Posted 21 Aug 2010 in 70s, Albums of 1977, Albums of the 70s, Jam Band

Today’s Cool Album of the Day (#126 in the Series) is Grateful Dead, Terrapin Station. You hardly ever hear people mention this album when they talk about the Dead, well maybe a little but it doesn’t get it due. What Terrapin Station is known for is the full sided title track that is side two. The sixteen plus minute song, and one that was performed in it’s entirety many times by the band. It’s broken into six parts: –Lady With a Fan –Terrapin Station –Terrapin –Terrapin Transit –At a Siding –Terrapin Flyer –Refrain Two songs on side one did get some actual airplay. They were Bob Weir’s ‘Estimated Prophet’ and their take on the traditional favorite “Sampson and Delilah.”  ”Dancin’ in...

Chicago’s Aragon Ballroom. The Most Complete Listing of Shows from the 60s thru the 90s

Ah the Aragon Ballroom. This is a fun listing for the old Rock ‘n’ Rollers that visit the Cool Album of the Day site. Here’s a list of just about ever show that was held at the Aragon Ballroom in the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago.  If you went there, have fun looking thru this list.  Look for the shows that you saw. Feel ‘bummed’ about the ones you missed. Be angry about the ones that you would have checked out but you didn’t know about, until now. I’ve combined different listings to form this list. I’ve even contacted band members and did poster research to find others. It’s the best list on the ‘net! If you were never...
