Documentary: “LA, From The Byrds to the Eagles” …… “The Corporatization of Rock and the Death of a Dream”

I had a chance to see this on DVD awhile back. I can’t even remember how I got a copy of it; I don’t believe it was ever released here in the States. I’m not sure if it was ever televised here either.  Maybe BBC American ran it, I don’t know, they produced it. The official title is Hotel California, L.A. From The Byrds to The Eagles. If you’re a fan of the Los Angeles music scene from say…. ’66 thru about ’75, then this is a must watch for you. It looks at the careers of The Byrds, Flying Burrito Brothers, Gram Parsons, Linda Ronstadt, The Buffalo Springfield, CSNY, Poco, Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, David Geffen and...

Poco “Live at Columbia Studios, Hollywood 9/30/71″

Today’s Cool Album of the Day (#523 in the Series) is Poco, Live at Columbia Studios Hollywood 9/30/71 Poco, Live at Columbia Studios, Hollywood 9/30/71 while recorded over 40 years ago, did not surface until early in 2011.  We’re glad it did. I say that because the first obvious reason, that I wanted to hear this, but also for a second, even more important reason.  That being that this was a very important day in the bands history. It was a “coming out party” if you will, for the new line-up that would become the most popular in the bands history. Yeah, I know they did have a couple big hits much later, but this period will always be...

Poco “Pickin’ Up the Pieces”

Today’s Cool Album of the Day is the debut album from Poco, Pickin’ Up The Pieces.   It must be nice to be known as a band that helped establish a new genre of music. Why isn’t this band in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? Their omission is a real tragedy.  Some things just don’t make sense.  Someday I hope, they surely deserve it. Poco laid their plan.. right there.. in the lyrics in the title cut. Call it a Mission Statement: ‘Well, there’s a little bit of magic In the music we’re playin’ So let’s begin We’ll bring you back down home where the folks are happy Sittin pickin’ and a-grinnin’ Casually, you and me We’ll...

Foster and Lloyd “Foster and Lloyd”

Today’s Cool Album of the Day (#275 in the Series) is the self-titled debut from Foster and Lloyd. I’ve stated more than once that Americana is my genre of choice the past few years. Foster and Lloyd is another band that fits my taste perfectly. This was their debut album. I actually started this write up planning to do their second release, Faster and Llouder, but I couldn’t find many videos for that album. I really wanted you to be able to check out some of the album. I was able to find some for the first album so I made the switch. One of the things I’ve always liked about Foster and Lloyd was the little taste of...

Buffalo Springfield “Buffalo Springfield Again”

Today’s Cool Album of the Day (#209 in the Series) is Buffalo Springfield, Buffalo Springfield Again. Buffalo Springfield didn’t last too long, but did pretty darn well when they were around.  How many other bands released just three albums yet make it into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? Those three albums were Buffalo Springfield, Buffalo Springfield Again and Last Time Around. Today we’re going to look at that middle album. This album featured well known tracks written by the three main front men. Those songs would remain part of their individual live shows until today. They would be Neil Young with ‘I am a Child’ and ‘Mr. Soul,’ Richie Furay with ‘A Child’s Claim to Fame’ and...

Grateful Dead “Europe ’72″

Today’s Cool Album of the Day (#165 in the Series, and #1 in the Live, Saturday Night Series) is the Grateful Dead, Europe ’72. As you can see by the intro, we are breaking new ground this evening. Previously, we have not feature ‘live’ albums on our blog.  I’ve only written up two in all these days. They were Poco, Live at Columbia Studios, Hollywood 9/30/71 and Little Feat, Waiting For Columbus. The Poco entry was to help promote a great new release while the Feat album was to honor the drumming of Richie Hayward. Hayward had just passed away. But this evening that all changes as from today on, we start anew. Every Saturday we will be featuring...

Gram Parsons "GP"

Today’s Cool Album of the Day (#134 in the Series) is Gram Parson’s, GP. I was shocked to see that I hadn’t featured Gram Parson’s as of yet.  He’s one of my all-time favorites.   I did feature him as part of The Byrds, Sweethearts of the Rodeo era. GP was Gram’s first of two studio albums.  Grievous Angel was the second and could have been as easily featured as GP since they are both outstanding pieces of music. GP was home for some of Gram’s most wonderful moments.  He was in excellent voice in this era.  Give a listen to some of the slower moments of the disc including ‘A Song For You, Streets of Baltimore, She’ or ‘The...
