Neil Young and Crazy Horse “Live Rust”
Today’s Cool Album of the Day (#960) is Neil Young and Crazy Horse, Live Rust If I read it one more time I’m going to hurl. Now what would that be? Well that would be that Live Rust was recorded on Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s tour supporting Rust Never Sleeps. No, No a million times no! Most of Live Rust was recorded at the Cow Palace in San Francisco on October 22, 1978. Rust Never Sleeps was released, June, July 1979. Live Rust was released on Nov., 1979. How wrong is the statement that Live Rust was recorded to support Rust Never Sleeps? Well, some of Rust Never Sleeps was recorded during the Live Rust tour. Live Rust was...
Devo with Neil Young ‘Hey Hey My My (Into The Black)
Song Of The Day by Eric Berman – “Hey Hey My My (Into The Black)” by Devo w/Neil Young Q: Where do the worlds of The Kingston Trio, Devo and Neil Young all collide? A: In the film Human Highway, of course! Human Highway was a dreadful film released by Bernard Shakey (aka Neil Young) in 1982. The move was filmed between 1978 and 1981 and it starred Neil Young, Dean Stockwell, Dennis Hopper, Russ Tamblyn and Devo. It was briefly shown in movie theaters upon its release and was never to be seen again until its home video release in 1995 on VHS. It is currently out of print. While the movie is quirky and mostly incoherent, it...
Bob Dylan, Wilco, My Morning Jacket Bring AmericanaramA Festival To Chicago – A CONCERT REVIEW
Song Of The Day by Eric Berman – “A Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall” by Bob Dylan and his Band from the “Americanarama Festival” 2013 We live in the day and age of festivals. For music fans, festivals offer bang for the buck providing the opportunity to see numerous bands that you might not ever get to see otherwise at one time and in one place. For musicians, they open up the possibility of gaining a wider audience, particularly with festivals like the annual Pitchfork Music Festival that will be taking place here in Chicago next weekend. With a roster consisting of mostly up and coming artists, Pitchfork provides a bonanza for inquiring fans who want to discover music they’ve...
Neil Young and the Bluenotes .. ‘This Note’s For You’
Song Of the Day by Eric Berman – “I’m Going” by Neil Young & The Bluenotes After going electronic on Trans, country and western on Old Ways, and then turning himself into a rockabilly cat with The Shocking Pinks, what else could Neil Young have had in store for fans whose patience was beginning to wear thin as the 1980s drew to a close? Soul man! In 1988, Neil Young put together a soulful horn band called The Bluenotes and recorded the album This Note’s For You. The album was seen as a return to form after a string of patchy genre-hopping releases for Geffen Records, and it was also his first release back on the Reprise label. The...
Neil Young ‘American Stars and Bars’
Song Of The Day by Eric Berman – “Saddle Up The Palomino” by Neil Young American Stars And Bars was one of Neil Young’s most patchy albums, but that’s not because the material on the record is lacking. Quite the contrary, the songs are pretty much top notch throughout this “Whitman Sampler” of styles and sounds. However, the record does seem to get unfairly knocked for several reasons… For one, the record was recorded in several sessions between 1974 and 1977 with different lineups. This approach to recording doesn’t lend itself to a consistent listening experience. The entirety of the first side was recorded in April of 1977 with Crazy Horse and The Bullets (Frank Sampedro, Billy Talbot,...

Neil Young and Crazy Horse to Release “Americana” on June 5th.
Details for the new Neil Young and Crazy Horse release have now just become much clearer. The album is going to be titled Americana and is going to be released on June 5th. It’s the first time that Neil Young and Crazy Horse have released an album in nine years, with that being Greendale in 2003. However, it’s the first full album with all three Crazy Horse members them since Broken Arrow, that was 1996. “The Horse” remains Billy Talbot on bass, Ralph Molina on drums and Frank “Poncho” Sampedro on guitar and organ. Sampedro sat out the Greendale sessions feeling that a one guitar voice was more fitting for the project. Neil explained the newest project in...
Buffalo Springfield Reunion Tour Off Again.
The anticipated Buffalo Springfield reunion tour is not going to happen, again. It once was a woman most anticipated tours of 2011, and then was pushed back to 2012, and now it’s off indefinitely. My guess is it’s more like “definitely.” The Buffalo Springfield had not played together since 1968 when they decided to reunite and the 2010 Bridge School Benefit Concert. Shortly after the success of that show, the band announced that Neil Young, Richie Furay and Stephen Stills (along with the rhythm section of Joe Vitale and Rick Rosas) would tour in 2011. That did not come about but the band said that it would be a goal for 2012. Now word comes out to 2012...
Neil Young “Tonight’s The Night”
Today’s Cool Album of the Day is Neil Young, Tonight’s The Night. Happy 65th birthday wishes go out to Neil Young today as we feature his touching album Tonight’s The Night. Neil lost two close friends to drug deaths, only about six months apart. One was the guitarist of his backing band, Crazy Horse, Danny Whitten. The other, Bruce Berry, was a long time roadie for Neil. Bruce was also the brother to Jan, of ‘Jan and Dean’ fame. Much of this album was a direct response to those losses. Both of those men died shortly before Neil started writing this album. Bruce Berry is mentioned by name in the title track while Danny Whitten can be heard on...
